Question lang po Padre. When and what heretical movement first questioned the divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ? Was it Docetism in the 1st century of Arianism in the 4th century?

Dear Regina,

The First Heresy to deny categorically the Divinity of Jesus is EBIONISM founded by Ebion. This is a group of heretical Jews who taught that the Lord Jesus is fully human and not Divine. However, they failed to convince the believers. The one who truly propagated the denial of the Divinity of Jesus is Arius of Alexandria. He succeeded in converting many places to his heresies but St. Athanasius and the succeeding Fathers of the Church successfully defeated this group.

Docetism is a heresy that teaches Jesus is only God but not human.

Then, Apollinarianism teaches that Jesus is God but not fully human because it teaches that the spirit of Jesus is replaced by the Divine Spirit. Thus Jesus had a body and soul but no human spirit.
