A SHORT EXEGESIS OF 2 PETER 1.20-21 by Bro. Jubernson Alabastro, CFD-Davao

St. Peter the Apostle

2 Peter 1:20-21

I agree that in one sense, 2 Peter 1:20-21 means that the nature of scripture did not result from the personal opinion of the prophet, but from the PROPHET INSPIRED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT (v.21.) Prophets do not make up their own prophecies, but received them from God. The obvious implication then is that since the Holy Scripture ORIGINATED from the HOLY-SPIRIT-INSPIRED-PROPHETS (V.21), it must also be EXPOUNDED BY the HOLY-SPIRIT-GUIDED-AND-AUTHORIZED-PERSON, that is it should not be interpreted by one's own private judgment (v.20.) This is the second sense of 2Peter 1:20-21. The nature of the scripture (1) ORIGINATED from PERSONS GUIDED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT and (2) must NOT be PRIVATELY INTERPRETED OR EXPOUNDED “apart” FROM PERSONS OF AUTHORITY GUIDED BY THE SAME SPIRIT.

Since the word “INTERPRETATION” (greek epilusis) in 2Peter 1:20 occurred only once in the New Testament, let us examine how the verb, from where this word was derived, was used in NT in order to discover the sense in which the noun (epilusis) may be used. T he verb epiluō is where the word epilusis came from according to Strong’s Greek and Hebrew Dictionary. Interestingly, this verb was used in the NT as to mean to solve further, that is, (figuratively) to EXPLAIN, DECIDE: - DETERMINE, EXPOUND.

Mark 4:34 And without parable he did not speak unto them; but apart, he EXPLAINED all things to his disciples.

Act 19:39 But if you ask anything concerning other matters, it shall be DETERMINED in a lawful assembly.

The usage of epiluō proves therefore that 2 Pet. 1:20-21 maybe interpreted in the second sense I have given above.
